Most AI tools try to generate your story. We help you write a better one.
Screenplay Assistant turns a story written in plain prose into a properly formatted screenplay. You write each scene the way you would tell it to a friend, or dictate it out loud, and the app sets it in industry-standard screenplay format: scene headings, action, character cues, dialogue, parentheticals and transitions. You choose how much help you want on every scene, from formatting alone (Format Only), to a line edit that keeps every spoken line word for word (Creative Polish), to a script doctor’s pass that adds action and imagery (Script Doctor). None of the three adds an event, a character or a conversation you did not write. Bring a story in as plain text, Word, PDF or Final Draft (.fdx), including a voice-memo transcript pasted in as one block, and take it out as Final Draft, PDF or text. It is made by PLAYCODE3 LLC, a small studio on Long Island, New York, it runs in any modern browser with nothing to install, and it is free to start on the Spark plan with no credit card.
You already know your story. It plays in your head like a movie you have seen a hundred times. What you have never had is a way to get it out whole. Method Storytelling gets it onto the page, scene by scene, in your own words. The AI does not invent your story. It keeps you moving, and the words stay yours.
Screenplay Assistant by PLAYCODE3 is an AI-assisted screenwriting app. Type each scene the way you would tell it to a friend, and the app formats it into industry-standard screenplay pages. A Story Map keeps your structure honest, an in-app first reader called Muse gives candid feedback, and a built-in craft guide called Story Lab helps you write a story worth telling. When you are ready, you can bring it to life with character portraits, storyboards, and whole-scene AI video with sound, one render per scene, up to 30 seconds. The words stay yours.
Who it is for
The writer who already has the story and has no one to tell it to. You have carried it around for years. You know the characters, you know how it ends, and every time you sit down to write it the page wins. This is for you. There is nothing to download and no app store. Screenplay Assistant runs in any modern web browser on Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad, or Android. Sign in with Google and your screenplay follows you across devices.
What you can do
- Story Map: plan your story on a beat spine with a live tension arc, then write straight into any beat.
- AI screenplay formatting on every scene, in industry-standard format, at the level you choose: Format Only sets the page and adds no words of its own, Creative Polish line-edits your own sentences and keeps every spoken line word for word, and Script Doctor adds action lines and imagery and may rework a line. No level invents an event, a character or a conversation you did not write.
- Type your scene or dictate it out loud. Dictation writes down exactly what you say and changes nothing, and it is free on every plan.
- Import a story as plain text (.txt), Word (.docx), PDF, or Final Draft (.fdx). A long block of text, including a voice-memo transcript pasted in whole, is split into scenes for you.
- Story Lab: a how-to-write craft book personalized to your project.
- Muse: an honest first reader that responds live as you write. Atticus is the separate help assistant that answers questions about how the app works, from the How It Works manual. Muse reads your pages; Atticus explains the app.
- Method Storytelling™, the story-first way of working this app is built around, taught inside it in Story Lab and laid out on the Story Map.
- Pacing markers and a screen-time estimate on every scene.
- Drag to reorder scenes, with an AI continuity check.
- Character portraits in multiple visual styles, one click for the whole cast, plus a four-angle design sheet and a full-body Persona for the characters you need to hold consistent.
- Graphic-novel pages from your storyboards, which can be turned into a printable comic book on any plan, or published on Amazon KDP as a Kindle eBook and a print-ready PDF on the Writer plan and above.
- Props and Locations reference images, Panel Studio, and storyboards to visualize your shots, rendered on Image 2.5.
- Animate a storyboard into a moving scene video with sound, one render per scene, up to 30 seconds, on Seedance 2.5, and combine scenes into a finished film.
- Table Read: your script performed aloud, like an audiobook, with a story voice for each character made from who they are in the script.
- Plot Holes: reads your whole story and lists possible plot holes, one card each with a small fix and a Go to scene button. A second opinion that never changes your pages, on the Writer plan and above.
- Writer’s Record™, a PLAYCODE3 original: the app counts what you wrote and what it added while formatting, then prints one page saying how much of the script is yours. Your story never appears on it.
- Export to PDF, Final Draft (.fdx), storyboard, and video.

Frequently asked questions
What is Screenplay Assistant?
Screenplay Assistant is a web app from PLAYCODE3 that turns a story written in plain prose into a properly formatted screenplay. You type each scene the way you would tell it to a friend, or dictate it out loud, and the app formats it into industry-standard screenplay format (scene headings, action, character cues, dialogue, parentheticals, transitions). You choose how much help each scene gets: Format Only sets the page and adds no words of its own, Creative Polish line-edits your own sentences and keeps every spoken line word for word, and Script Doctor adds action lines and imagery. It also generates character portraits, storyboards, graphic-novel pages and whole-scene video, and supports full round-trip Final Draft (.fdx) import and export.
Is it free?
Yes. The Spark plan is free forever. No credit card is required and there is no new password to create: sign in with a Google account, an Apple ID, a Microsoft account, or a one-time code emailed to any address. PLAYCODE3 covers the AI service costs on the Spark plan. Paid plans are Writer at $7 a month or $5 a month billed yearly, Storyteller at $35 a month or $29 a month billed yearly, and Studio at $99 a month or $79 a month billed yearly.
Do I keep the rights to what I write?
Yes. Full copyright in your characters, plot, dialogue, and any creative work you write in Screenplay Assistant stays with you. PLAYCODE3 LLC makes no claim to your creative work.
What AI services does it use?
Anthropic is used for screenplay formatting, the in-app Muse reader, the Atticus help guide, and the storyboard panel planner, with an OpenAI model as the formatting fallback. OpenAI is used for story parsing, character inference, and image generation (portraits and storyboard panels). Fal.ai renders scene video on Seedance 2.5. AI services do not train on content submitted through their APIs per their published API data-usage policies.
Can I import a Final Draft file?
Yes. Screenplay Assistant imports Final Draft (.fdx) files with acts and episodes, scenes (including subtitles), characters with traits (Age, Ethnicity, Gender, Role), aliases, ScriptNotes, and arc-beat character tagging. Edits made in Screenplay Assistant export back to .fdx with Final Draft's formatting, page settings, and production tagging preserved.
Does it write the story for me?
No. The AI formats the prose you supply into screenplay format and helps with optional tasks like portrait and storyboard generation. It does not invent plot, scenes, or dialogue. The writer is the source of every creative choice.
